Elegant Insects By Sandra Buchholz

Insects are rarely appreciated for the intricacy and diversity of their form. I find them very beautiful, and enjoy translating them into wearable art in Silver and Vermeil. My jewelry is either one of a kind or limited editions, and includes a variety of insects both ordinary and exotic.

Double Dragonfly Necklace: Two dragonflies, cast in Sterling Silver are connected with a central Lapis stone and decorated with a small Lapis at either end. Each dragonfly has a 3” wing spread. The chain is hand made, and consists of thin flat links that alternate with thicker oval links. The entire necklace is about 22 inches long.

Dragonfly Pin: This dragonfly is made in Fine Silver, and has a very intricate and delicate design. The wings are densely granulated, with additional granulation on the body, head and tail. The dragonfuly has a 3” wing spread, and is about 3” from head to tail. The body and head are three dimensional. It has a handmade clasp.

Horned Beetle Pin: The Horned Beetle is cast in Sterling Silver and is almost 4” long and 2” wide. The antenna and legs are added after the body is cast, using different size wires to give the effect of real insect legs. The antenna are made of twisted wires and have a bead at the end of each to add to the interest of the design. The beads may vary- they may be garnets, amethysts (illustrated) or other gemstones, as does the finish. Finishes include the one shown here, (oxidized to a medium gray with bright highlights) as well as bright, shiny look, or a soft brushed look.

A Pair of Houseflies: Common, ordinary flies, in Sterling Silver and Vermeil, probablylarger than you would wish to actually see flying around the house At 1"x3/4", they make wonderful lapel pins, tie tacs or cuff links.

Flying Cockchafer: When beetles fly, they take on a completely different look than when they are on the ground. Suddenly, their delicate back wings emerge from the solid front wing cases. The contrast between the two is quite remarkable and beautiful. This cockchafer also attracted me because of its wonderful antenna which resemble delicate little fringes. This pin is about 2 1/4"x21/2 inches in Sterling Silver.

Dragonfly Earrings: Sometimes mistaken for fairies, these dragonfly earrings (shown in Vermeil) are made with Baroque Pearls drops . I also make them in Sterling Silver, with a variety of semi-precious beads in place of the pearls. They are 1" wide and 1/2" long, and can be made as tie tacs, lapel pins or cufflinks. They are very lightweight and fit gracefully right at the bottom of the earlobe.

Luna Moth: This beautiful creature often flies around outdoor lights at night. It is a pale green color and quite large for a moth. My Sterling Silver moth pin is approximatly 3"x3" and has a bead dangling from the end of each wing. The beads may vary from gray pearls to tourmalines, and other semi precious stones. Like the Swallowtail, it is especially suited to wearing on a coat or suit jacket, and makes a lovely small sculpture when not being worn as jewelry.

Large Bee: The bee has its wings and legs extended. It is highly detailed, and has a very tactile quality. It has a 3" wingspread, and is 2" long. The bee illustrated is in vermeil (gold plated Sterling Silver), but I also make it in sterling with a warm, dark gray finish with bright highlights.

Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly: This butterfly was a challenge to make. My goal was to translate the wing markings into three dimensional patterns in Sterling Silver, while keeping them as accurate as possible. The result is a highly decorative 4"x3" pin, especially suited to wearing on a suit jacket or a coat. It is very sculptural, and could be set on a platform as a small sculpture when not being worn as a piece of jewelry.

Crown Dragonfly: Dragonfly of Sterling Silver, with five Citrine Cabochons in the form of a crown. It is cast and fabricated.

Praying Mantis: This Praying Mantis is made of Sterling Silver. It is about 4 inches long and very realistic looking. It is both cast and Fabricated.
