I do 3D design and model-making for the trade as well as custom design for private clients.
These models were designed in the CAD program Rhinoceros and rendered in Flamingo. I have recently started using ArtCAM, as well. Before I began this phase of my career, I worked as bench jeweler for 16 years.
It's been said that Computer Aided Design jewelry looks cold, blocky and formulaic. Part of my design intent in working as a CAD jeweler is to defy and break stereotypical perceptions.
I have always loved organic shapes found in nature. The imperfect elegance of a seed pod or flower, the perfect symmetry of a snow flake, is evocative of a creative intelligence at play in the universe.
With these images in mind, I'm motivated to focus my abilities. I look to the classic Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Asian forms for inspiration, hoping to make something that will be both part of the past and part of the future.
My goal is to make jewelry that is pleasing to the eye, first and foremost. If I can incorporate some meaningful theme, thought or idea to my work, that is secondary, but not less important.
I try to be sensitive to the needs of my customers by making something that people will find a special affinity for, and also feel very comfortable wearing.
It's just jewelry, nothing more and nothing less! |
