    Dear John, Well at least I didn't buy it from the "Iron Mongers".
     I included the "19th century name because asking for HCL at the
    hardware store (in the US) will get you funny looks and some
    reply like "Uh, We don't stock anything like that."  Using the
    19th century name will get you what you want from that source. 
    But thanks for reminding us that "muriatic" is truly an archaic
    term.  Eben
