We all shaped by our experiences. I went through traditional
apprenticeship, but looking back I realized that in my current
practice I have rejected almost everything that I was taught.
Nevertheless, I have nothing but the deepest respect to every mentor
    I have ever had.

I know it sounds contradictory, but only on the surface. It brings
into the sharp focus what constitutes teaching. Einstein once said "
I never teach my pupils, I only create environment where they can
learn". There is a great wisdom on display here.

I do not believe it is possible to teach goldsmithing in a sense like
teaching Mathematics. Goldsmithing is highly individualized skills.
There are standards, but there are no standardized way of achieving
them. Instructor can only show his/her way of doing things. It is up
to a student to adapt it to their own circumstances.

My DVDs are based on that principles. Techniques that are shown are
based on my physical characteristics, tools in my possession, and
etc. For example: I do most of my work simply holding things in my
left hand. I have sufficient strength in my fingers to secure parts
that I am working with. It may be difficult and even unsafe for
beginners. If this is the case that beginner should take what he/she
can out of technique and add his own. Using some kind of a vise, in
this particular example. And that is how personal growth takes place.

Because of the demonstrated techniques are individualized, it forces
viewer to think how it can be adapted, and that is very beneficial to
skill acquisition. Because no matter how well one is trained, and
how long his/her apprenticeship lasted, almost every new project will
contain something not experienced before. The true mark of a
goldsmith is how these curved balls are handled, and the earlier
student starts thinking and adapting, the solutions to these problems
    would become easier and easier.
