Stylistic Scarab Beetle Ring and Fused Diamond Ring
    Hansmeevis

There is a fine line between a goldsmith making what he wants or
making things to sell. For instance, I sometimes make precisely what
I like and, mostly they don't sell very fast, I'm afraid. So
eventually they sit around in dusty corners of the safe or in the
shop window collecting tarnish. On the other side, most of the shop
jewellery I make is not too over the top. Jewellery has to be pretty,
practical and priced within reason to have a good chance of selling.
Believe it or not, this is one of those rings. OK, so I think it is
    pretty" Some might not (G)....

    Works Being Copied!
    Atinuj

This is a sad story. Only a week after I posted my article about an
up and coming jewelry brand here in Thailand, their works have been
copied and sold on a website! That's right, what one person spent
months creating are now being sold at wholesale prices by someone
else"in this case a european silver manufacturer. This is very
discouraging for young jewelry designers/makers who are working so
hard to make a name for themselves....

    Project #3 - Planished Bangle
    Laurie Jane Kern

I started this over the weekend, then went out to dinner, had to go
to work, and you know how it goes. Your day job just takes over. BUT
I went into work early today so I could get home early and finish
this. You see on Sunday I had cut out the copper (the book says
bronze, but copper is what I had), and rounded the ends, and there
it sat. So today, when I got home, I was able to put my NEW mushroom
stake in the bench vise [reminder to me: Drill hole in work bench to
hold stakes], pulled out my planishing hammer and went at it. Gosh
it was fun [despite imagining I was whacking someone] with the
balled end. Then when I was done making the dimples, I turned the
hammer over, and went at the edges. All this hammering took a total
    of maybe 30 minutes.....

    Don't Forget the Other "Ruby"
    Jim Sweaney

One of the hottest gems on the market in recent years has been the
natural spinel. New finds in Tanzania and Vietnam have stimulated
excitement in the gem trade for this sleeper gem. Long thought to be
a type of ruby, the spinel in not well known to the public. In
truth, this hot coal of a gem really offers many benefits for both
    the jeweler and his clients....

    New Years in July
    Loiskmartens

For studio jewelers in Italy August represents the end of the
jewelry making year. Metals, stones and findings dealers close for
the entire month. Some have advised us that they will not reopen
until the second week of September. The newspapers do not even quote
the prices of precious metals on the financial page. We dust down our
bench and take in the scraps and filings for refining. There is a
last rush to finish any outstanding work for clients and consign.
Then all precious objects and materials are gathered up and put away
and the vault is closed. So the end of July is a time of summing up
and analyzing how the work year went and the time to make
    resolutions for the coming year.....

Compensate Declining Online Sales Utilizing Local Spokane Jewelry /
    Gemstone Events Shows
    Georgeingraham

Recently I did a little poll on my forum asking other lapidaries how
their online sales have been doing. There were a couple of comments
that stood out. First, although the number of folks utilizing the
poll were few, online gemstone and jewelry sales seem to be in
decline past few months. The month of July stood out the most for
myself. One comment that really stood out was how it is local
artists, and various shows and events are where a great deal of
sales and business opportunities are coming from. I do know from
experience not related to lapidary how successful attending local
shows can be. Both from sales and equally important Networking !
Meeting local artists and lapidaries. Online social networking can
be very successful for both of these. A comment was made on another
forum about the importance of utilizing "local" online social
networking from a "networking" perspective.. Not to focus on "local"
online social networking for sales, but concentrate on using it as a
    local networking tool....
