    Robyn Hawk

The Manning House would like to thank all exhibitors, teachers and
buyers who made the Manning House Bead Show 2009 such a wonderful
event. We hope to see all of you again in 2010. Our incredible and
generous exhibitors donated awesome merchandise for the Manning House

Sotheby's: Blue Diamond to be Featured.
    Robyn Hawk

The centerpiece of the forthcoming Magnificent Jewels sale in Geneva
is an important and rare fancy vivid blue, internally flawless,
cushion-shaped diamond weighing 7.03 carats (pictured left), cut
from a 26.58 carat rough discovered in 2008 at Petra Diamonds'
historic Cullinan diamond mine in South Africa. The buyer will have
the honour of naming the diamond (est. CHF 6.8-10 million / $5.8-8.5
million). At a weight of 7.03 carats, the stone ranks among the most
important blue diamonds ever to be offered for sale by Sotheby's....

    Fire Drop
    Michael Johnson

Fire agates!!! When I saw my first real fire agate, my first
reaction was, "that looks like chewed up bubble gum." But, as you
look into these stones a little closer, they have a definite appeal
with tiny bubble shapes with glistening color shifts from red to
green. Most of these agates pose a challenge for the designer as they
tend to have a bumpy irregular shape. But, when you carve one of
these, you will know why the lapidary had to carve it into such an
odd shape. To maximize the most of the fire (play in color) and to
give the bubbles shapes the best optical effects you end up chasing
microscopic layers, following their bubbly shapes. This leaves you
    with an odd shaped cab.....

    History Part Three: Silver Chains
    Laurie Jane Kern

So now, in Part Three I will tell you about my discovery of chains
and my start of working in Silver Again it was late 2008 and I had
made a few wire wrap pendants and I went shopping for a chain. I have
to admit that I only looked in a few local jewelry (i.e. mall)
stores. I was not finding what I wanted but I eventually found a
chain that would do. At this moment I was not even thinking of going
down the path I am currently following. My husband and I then went
to the annual San Diego "Gem Diego". It was there that I saw a
display of chains. Of course there was some chain maille items but
there were other chains as well. And the person who had done the
display was giving a demo of chain maille. I now know that it was
    Paul Kloppenborg....
