This is a welcome, lively and impassioned exchange. As a SNAG board
member, my areas of activity include being the liaison to Metalsmith
and its Editorial Advisory Committee. Hopefully, I can clarify some
of the points about Metalsmith and the Exhibition in Print.

SNAG does publish Metalsmith but the SNAG Board does not specifically
tell the editor what to put in the magazine. We do pay attention and
evaluate and oversee the large picture and scope of the magazine, but
we are not actually doing the editing. I provide the communication
between the board and the editor. The editor always wants feedback
and anyone can contact her directly. Suzanne Ramljak's e-mail is
editor at snagmetalsmith dot org Mine is spzilker at sbcglobal dot
    net

EiP this is a curated issue. There is a 3-year cycle with the EiP
    issues.

Commissioned curator. The Editorial Advisory Committee invites a
curator to present their point of view in the issue. Curated. The
Editorial Advisory Committee selects from proposal submission. Anyone
can submit a proposal. Submissions are widely solicited. Juried. The
Editorial Advisory Committee invites the jurors. It is open to
anyone. Non-SNAG members pay a higher entry fee.

This one is a Curated Issue. The curated issues are supposed to be
an exhibition with a specific curatorial point of view. It is not
meant to be reflective of the field as a whole or of the magazine as
a whole. It is an extended vision, an exploration beyond the norm.

This issue's curators are Kate Bonansinga, Director of the Stanlee
and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts at University of Texas
at El Paso, and Rachelle Thiewes, Professor of Art, University of
    Texas at El Paso.

There have been a variety of curated EiP's highlighting different
aspects of the field and including many materials, such as--flatware,
hollowware, multiples, enamel. Jamie Bennett and Marilyn da Silva
will jury the next one in 2009 with the theme of "Saturated Metal &
    Color".

Metalsmith has a range of departments that cover many dimensions of
our complex world. A new one is "In Fashion" which will explore the
intersection of the marketplace and the studio jeweler. The other
ongoing departments are Books, Studio, Possessed, View, Features,
    and Reviews.

SNAG's name--I am also chair of the Name Change Committee, charged
with researching any interest/attitudes/effect in changing the name.
SNAG was an accurate description 40 years ago but does it still
work? As Gabriel mentioned, some people feel that the tradition is
important. I would love to hear any more thoughts on that subject.

SNAG Conference 2010 Houston. Diane Falkenhagen and I are
co-chairing the annual event. Our theme is "Going to Extremes". We
are planning to highlight all the different directions in the field
by comparison and contrast. Check snagmetalsmith.org for more details
of the theme. Send us any ideas for exhibitions or presentations or
things you would like to see included.

Financial Metalsmith is supported by subscriptions, the subscription
portion of member dues, advertisers, sales of back-issues, and
    newsstand sales. It is self-supporting.

The SNAG Board is listening/reading and enthusiastically wants your
    input.

Sandie Zilker
