Hi Rick,

Most of the tests of "white buffalo" that I have heard of came back
as alunite or howlite as you have stated.

The Manual of Mineralogy that I am referring to is a standard
college text after Dana. Chalcosiderite is mentioned in the section
about the turquoise group, but is not, as you have stated, turquoise.

In my opinion, chalcosiderite is not turquoise, it is a separate
mineral. I am going to collect samples from my claims that come from
turquoise producing veins and appear white. I have never marketed any
material as white turquoise (and really don't care to) but I am
continuously curious about what I find in the field.

Finally, about those "clams". I recovered some in the '90's while
digging variscite in Nevada. Some of them were incredible green with
black spiderweb. We always considered them to be phosphate
concretions rather than replacement fossil formations. Have you been
able to find out who determined them to be clams? Maybe someone at NM
Tech? These things have become quite collectible lately but I am
reluctant to sell any as "clams" until I know for sure. They sure are
    cool though.
