    Glad you brought this up, and sorry to slightly hijack this thread. 

    Years ago when I was working in a retail jewelry store, someone came
    in (said they were a gemologist) and schooled us on our improper use
    of "rainbow moonstone". They said what we were calling "rainbow
    moonstone" (the same as everyone else) was actually spectrolite, in
    the same family as Labradorite (oops, hope I'm not messing this up).
    Is this true? I know you can't see what he was referring to, but
    it's the material all the gem dealers call "rainbow moonstone" mostly
    found in beads and cabs. So, I've been calling it spectrolite ever
    since. 

    And, while we're at it, can you educate me on the "smokey topaz" you
    were referring to? I kinda assumed it was just brown quartz. Am I
    close?
