I'm no great photographer, but I know plenty about it in a "look
over their shoulder" sense - this is Ansel Adams territory, among
others...... Anybody who thinks that traditional professional
photography EVER came straight off the camera is simply naive. It
has never been considered cheating or inappropriate - it is, and has
always been, a part of "the photographic process." Ansel Adams
didn't capture that radiant light with the deep shadows through the
lens, he created it (or enhanced it) in the darkroom - dodging the
highs, burning the lows, tinkering with everything like a painter
with a painting till it was just so. Graphics software has made it
easier for anyone, and made it really easy to do compositing and
such, but it's really just what photography people have always been
doing, just a different toolbox. It is true that there was one very
famous photgrapher here locally (who's name escapes me - his book is
at home) who prided himself on no-photoshopping, but that's more like
a jeweler who prides themselves on no-casting or something - the
    exception, not the rule.
