As to the issue or non-issue of digital photo manipulation, a little
    food for thought.

When in Art School, we were taught to use film photography to image
art projects. In film imaging we were taught to take three and
preferably more 'brackets' of the object, changing f-stop, aperture
settings, lighting positions, camera lenses or filters, differing
lighting set-ups, sometimes even to using differing film types and
light sources..., the list of variables is long. Then in photo
processing, the processor can adjust color and effects, enlargers us
various lenses and filters and processing procedures to optimize the
outcome. High quality slide projectors use filters to 'color
correct', differing projection screens, and room lighting affect an
    images.

Today we have digital cameras, and software [ I'm currently
experimenting with 'Gimp' software, open source (free) image
software, striving to keep up with the expensive software's ] to
achieve what we hope will be the best representation of our pieces.
Film cameras and setups can manipulate an image, National Geographic,
Life, to Playboy, has used giant sized projection to "retouch" images
    for decades.

Honesty of output is solely in the hands of the person distributing
the image. At the current state of readily available technology, we
are largely restricted to two dimension representation of three
dimensional objects. Dimensional transformations will always be an
art in itself, not science [though we use science to perform this
    art].

Before I wrote this I goggled around about film and photography a
few minutes, so let's remember metal workings and stone work has been
around for thousands of years, color photography less than 90 years,
    digital imaging under 30 years?
