Kim, you could try the "historical" approach on this issue. Ancient
Mesopotamian stone statues of goddesses and wealthy women show them
wearing heavy necklaces, with counterweights often about two feet
long(!) hanging down the back. So, the counterweight tradition is at
least 4500 years old. (This approach may or may not be helpful,
depending on the customer, not to mention the style of the
    counterweight.)

All the best,
Judy Bjorkman
