I have stated several times in my replies on this subject, I do not
negotiate on repairs or custom. If asked about a lower price, I just
ask them if they want a cheap crappy repair job, (They always say
no), I tell them I am sure they can get it done somewhere for a lower
price, but I don't do that kind of work. I tell them I end up fixing
things other jewelers did poor quality work on. ( I do! ) Then I
just ask if they want to leave it for repair or do they want to think
    about it.

Sometimes I ask them, "You want me to be fast or accurate?" They
always say accurate. I say "That's the price for accurate." When
someone asks for a discount on anything, I usually say "I am glad you
asked", and I tell them most of our jewelry is at the price we want,
but sometimes we can do better. This keeps the lines of communication
open with out making them feel bad. I do not mark my repairs up and
then discount, so is this area guess I can be considered "ethical".
