Well put Richard Hart! Negotiating for price is something that some
people dread and others relish. It is like quite a lot of other
things in our culture that some don't like, but that certainly isn't
going away just because someone doesn't like it. My impression is
that buyers and sellers who have a healthy tolerance or even zeal
for negotiation are a lot happier about business and that those who
resent it. This thread has given some very useful ideas to both
sides of the argument. For those who do not want to negotiate on
price my advice would be to realize that if someone is asking, they
are not insulting your work, they are interested. However you handle
it, remember that they are considering buying. This is an opportunity
to make a sale. Be pleasant and seize the opportunity. Jewelry is an
emotional product and being harsh with your customers is not going
to get you anywhere. You can say. "No, I don't discount." pleasantly
and follow up with positive salesmanship. Half the battle in sales of
anything is getting a customer to the point that they are aware of
what is being sold and are actively thinking about it right now. It
must be a great luxury to have such a successful business that you
can get someone to that point and turn them away because they asked
you a question you found annoying.
