    This has been an interesting thread. When we first moved to Saudi
    Arabia, I loved going to the souk and bargaining with the shopkeepers
    for anything from gold to shoes. One was automatically given a
    discount if one's purchase happened to be the first or the last of
    the day. This was done to bring good luck to the shop. Sadly, more
    and more have gone to fixed prices, and the good luck discounts are
    also gone. These changes have taken the "flavor" out of the local
    market, and many shops have closed. For those shopkeepers still
    willing to negotiate, they are not willing to budge very much. I
    recently found some beautiful turquoise beads. The man wanted SR450
    for 9 beads. He finally went down to SR370, but even that was just
    too much...they were only 10 x 12 oval beads...and SR 370 is just
    shy of $100.
