    Yes, in parts of Europe it's an old practice as well, and both my
    sisters as well as all my female cousins were recipents of gold
    earrings shortly after being born. It's not that bizarre. 

    I would not make hoops, because those can be accidentally caught by
    little fingers and pulled. Studs are the way to go, and I think you
    can o this with a well constructed back that means the post won't
    get caught or pull out. Also, I would use gold, and this is also
    traditional. 

    If it's a cultural practice the family will know how to care for an
    infants pierced ears, and whoever does thte actual piercing should
    also let them know but anyway here are a couple of interesting, and

    Hygiene and other issues are probably best sorted out between the
    parents and their doctor; some docs advise waiting until the first
    tetanus vaccine shot is given.
