Andy,

You are so right! I have been thinking this for many years, and have
articulated it to students at times. When you make your own stock,
and become proficient with it, it no longer becomes a "chore" but
just a part of the metalsmithing process. You make what you need,
when you need it. When you are working on a custom piece, and some
part of the project is not right, or it is damaged in process, you
just make another part to replace it. Jewelers, like myself, who
have been in this business for many years, don't get all upset when
we have a "re-do", we just go about remaking the part, and get the
job done. We hope that we don't have to re-make parts very often, for
it cuts down our profit margin, but we don't cry about it, we just
move on. Much easier that way. Concerning your remark about "fear", I
agree with that, as well. A purchased piece of metal, when it
arrives, all wrapped up, bagged, tagged, and boxed, has quite a
"preciousness" about it. (Check out the invoice...) It's an
undeniable feeling. It's common to look at that polished piece of
metal and get a little intimidated by it. "Gosh, I hope I don't
screw this up!" For me, making so much of my stock myself, I just
don't get that same intimidation. If that piece of metal doesn't work
out, I can generate another piece just like it in a few minutes.
