    I can't imagine who you ordered this from, but it sounds like the
    piece was underfired. 

    With my own work that is kiln fired, this would never, never happen.
    I have discs very similar to what you describe and I can hammer
    them, solder them, etc. 

    It's also possible that the metal clay in your case was exposed to
    aluminum, which can cause a strange reaction.
