Perhaps metal clay will somewhat follow the steps of home-baked
goods being sold at open markets. Baked goods made within a home are
no longer permitted to be sold in the state of NJ because there are
too many variables in the baking process.

Any traditional jewelry method will start with products produced in
conditions that guarantee their silver percentage, etc. whereas the
final silver content in metal clay could be altered by an
inexperienced artisan. If this is the case, the Fed Trade. Comm.
could then question the stamping methods used for metal clay since
there is a variable that falls at the feet of those using the product
and that, will affect the "consumer" for whom the FTC supposedly
    works.

So, while it obviously won't be excluded as a means to product
pieces of jewelry, it may fall into a new area that warrants review
and its own unique stamp... and, much like the diamond industry made
sure they "educated" their consumers about the four C's; the metal
clay industry may want to create its own brochures to educate
    consumers.

As they say: best offense if a good defense.
