Whew, this is taking all of my work time up, reading all of these
posts! Very interesting, though. When I posted yesterday, I actually
hadn't read the last couple days of Digests (I finally got caught up
this morning), and I didn't know that Nanz had been let go. I just
wanted to say that Art Jewelry magazine is one of my favorites, and I
will happily continue to subscribe. I do think it's a shame that Nanz
was let go because of her post, perhaps there was another way around
the problem, but I do see the magazine's side in this, at least in
their having a real issue with her post. As an Orchid reader, I am
not fully aware of her experience or in what she is or isn't an
expert. In other words, I know she is knowledgeable with jewelry
making, so eventhough I have since learned that her knowledge is
supposed to be primarily traditional metalsmithing, if she has had a
strong opinion about something else, I have listened to it. She uses
the magazine's name in her posts, so she prmotes herself as a
representative of that magazine, and when she expresses these strong
opinions, they come across as expressions from them as well. If they
aren't in agreement with the magazine, then the magazine's name
shouldn't be posted along with them. Because of this connection,
enforced by the signature of her posts, I was really confused when I
read her post, being rather negative against the medium, when the
magazine obviously fully endorses it & regularly shares information
about it's wonderful possibilities. I wouldn't describe her post as
very "polite" as some others have, I think it was quite negative and
abrupt, not to mention clearly from some experience she had a long
time ago, which just added to my confusion.

Now, I will agree that perhaps the magazine's pages are too often
filled with metal clay articles, but that's sort of the "new thing of
the moment", and it makes sense. I'm sure that if the magazine had
started several years ago, polymer clay would have dominated the
table of contents. In a few years, it might be something else. Metal
clay is the new guy on the block, and it's a great addition to the
tool box for "art jewelry", so it's getting a lot of attention at the
moment by a magazine with that name. Any magazine is a business,
let's be realistic. This magazine knows that lots of its readers are
interested in the clay, otherwise the pages wouldn't be dominated by
it. If someone is going to make a dramatic, outdated and generalized
opinion that sounds like it comes from the magazine itself, then of
course they are going to have a problem with that. "Free speech"
doesn't mean you don't have to think about what you say, from where
it seems it's coming, and what the consequences might be if there's a
reasonable misunderstanding. As I said before, it's a shame that
Hazel felt that the only way to handle the situation was to let her
go, perhaps a clarification would have been good enough, but that is
the decision she felt was appropriate, and I'm sure it wasn't an easy
one. Yes, I will continue to subscribe.
