I don't think it was the critique of the material that provoked the
ire of the magazine, it was the inclusion at the end of the posting
of Nanz's Art Jewelery credentials and affiliation, which would
obviously imply to a reader that her personal opinion was shared by
the magazine. As someone else has pointed out, the magazine does
carry a lot of advertising for clay supplies and suppliers, so their
reaction has to be understandable by anyone who actually believes
that it's a good idea NOT to offend your customers. A summary sacking
for this does, however, seem to be an over-reaction when a simple
public apology and clarification of the personal-opinion nature of
the
    posting would normally suffice.

As for the great clay debate, those who are so against it might
reflect that here in Spain in the mid 1980's to early 1990s there
was a great debate over whether using vacuum casting and mechanical
centrifugal casting was really silversmithing, or just playing with
wax and then using a machine to produce jewelry.....those against it
said that it was obviously inferior to fabricated product, and that
you could always tell the difference, and they'd never seen a cast
piece that could compare with the elegance and economy of metal use
of a fabricated piece...those who were for it would cite various
pieces they'd seen and invite the traditionalists to comment on
    them...sounds familiarii

Of course, now the whole notion is a dead issue...and mechanical
casting is accepted as a valid technique that can produce great work
or lousy work....and the whole debate in retrospect was so much hot
    air.

Finally James, you are an acknowledged genius in my eyes as a
metalworker, but until someone builds a house shape in particle board
then fires it at high temperatures until it becomes a usable wooden
house, albeit with 6 or 7 % shrinkage in the process, then I'm not
going to be a fan of your analogy.

I use clay sometimes, I fabricate sometimes...I have earned a good
living over the last 30 years selling the stuff I make, and I don't
much care what other jewellers think of my stuff, they're not my
target clientele. I work to live... I don't live to work
