    Whatever the type of store - if they can't be bothered to display
    their prices in the window, I can't be bothered to go in and ask! The
    same goes for internet sites - if it says 'email for a quote' I just
    look elsewhere for a site that does display its prices. In this
    latter case, of course, my aversion is partly because I do not want
    to give out my email address left, right and centre for companies to
    sell in 'lists' - my mail program already deletes over 100 spam
    messages every day and I can do without more!! 

    Being a somewhat reticent Yorkshireman - notoriously 'careful' with
    my money, I will always, if I can, avoid a situation in which I have
    to ask the price of anything and thus lay myself open to the super
    salesmanship tactics of the shopkeeper aiming to sell me something I
    don't really need and will probably regret later. If this happened it
    would certainly put me off shopping in that store ever again and
    would make me recommend to my friends that they didn't either. I just
    like to know exactly where I stand before I make any approach or
    committment and, fortunately, there are always plenty of alternative
    shops and websites selling similar goods which are not secretive
    about their pricing.
