Patricia,

    Birwood-Casey's Perma Blue (Gun Blue) works well on mild steel, and
    they have a product called Super Blue that is supposed to work well
    on stainless and polished steels. I have had good success with both
    Perma and Super Blue on mild steel. I usually seal with Renaissance
    Wax or Johnson's Paste wax, although I think I am going to purchase
    some gun oil and try that.
