For some reason this topic has created a lot of "enthusiastic"
replies. I don't quite understand all the heated passion behind the
debate, but it has made for some interesting reading. I find I have
to chime in here, I'm having trouble with one reason in particular
that seems to be a repeater with why prices are not shown. Bill, I'm
using your last post as a reference since it's the last one I read
before writing this. As you said, "If they ask the price, you have
an interested person that you can tell a story to." Can you not
engage someone in conversation about a piece without them asking the
price? Can you not tell someone might be interested in a piece
without them asking for the price? If you want to educate them about
the piece, then educate them about it, but the price isn't what you
should have to educate them about. I don't understand how hiding the
price from them somehow allows you to educate them better. When
someone comes into my booth, I make sure to educate them well. I make
sure they know about the work that goes into my pieces, that the
chains are all handmade, that I do the filigree myself by hand, etc.
These are the things I talk about with them, not the prices. When
they stop for an extra moment when looking at piece, or remark to
their companion about a particular piece, I tell them about it, even
take it out for them to see up close, hold in their hands. They don't
need to ask about a price, they know the price. It's crystal clear &
does not need to be discussed. Discussing prices can be uncomfortable
to people. Lots of people. People react to different things different
ways, we live in a big and diverse world, and it's actually a bit
offensive of you to assess people who would be bothered by asking for
a price as "introverted internet people that like to hide out", as
you say. You mentioned too about the fancy clothing stores where the
prices are tucked away a bit, but that the customer can still find it
for themselves. Exactly! They CAN find it themselves. There is an
easy way with clothing to not have a big tag hanging off the side of
the article, but the customer can still find the price themselves.
With jewelry it's a bit trickier, and then it becomes the task of the
vendor to find a nice way to display the prices. Don't use big fat
tags. Maybe find a nice dark color or whatever blends nicely with
your display. Whatever works. We're creative people, we can find ways
to do what's necessary. Sure, we're selling beauty, but jewelry can
be displayed beautifully and still show how much it costs. OK, now
    *my* rant is over.
