========[ Invite a Friend - http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ]======== While we may assume that comprehension of those 10 words is an easy task for our brain, we cannot infer that the same is true of another person's brain, particularly if that person is unable to read or to easily process written text. Such an individual may indeed have to use more brain power to learn - either because the process they must use takes more energy as you say or because much of what is presented is in a form they cannot understand. In a previous post you said: If someone has to use pictures in his presentation, it only bespeaks of the lack of ability to communicate. I would respectfully offer that perhaps the use of pictures in a presentation bespeaks an understanding of the differences in individuals and a desire to actually achieve communication with those for whom words alone will not suffice. I personally educated an exceeding intelligent and talented woman in the interpretation of markings and construction techniques used in commercial sewing patterns because she is severely dyslexic and unable to follow written text. We accomplished this task by hands on experience with my demonstrations and added verbal descriptions in 4 or 5 sessions. Within months, her sewing skills and design innovations eclipsed my own. This lady learns differently than you and I are able to learn. Communication succeeded without written text but the learning was no less valid. > Compare that to the picture which is comprised of several thousands > color points and illustrating the same concept as a sentence; we > can handle it but we have to expend far more brain power to do it. As for your analysis of the brain's processing of a picture I have no scientific basis for disagreeing with you but my personal experience has been that I am able to retain an ordinary image and recall it more readily and more accurately than I can retain and recall what I have simply read, even though well-written. This is particularly true of written process instructions vs. illustrations of those processes. This is mostly conjecture on my part but if, as you suggest, that more brain power is required to interpret pictures than written words, perhaps the brain's processing involves utilizing multiple modalities and may actually result in a greater understanding with the image than with the text? > Also, perceiving letters, combining them in words, constructing > sentences out of words, assigning meaning to words is a creative > activity which makes one engaged in the learning process, while > viewing the picture is passive and information is not retained, > simply because we do not have to expend any creative energy, no > new brain pathways is formed. We simply chew on the colors and > proceed to the next picture. Though you say that we do not have to expend any creative energy in viewing pictures, I find that images of jewelry construction processes and such things as sculpture, landscapes and sea creatures (still or in motion) can set my mind swirling with ideas for jewelry design or puzzling over how to accomplish a texture, create a mechanism or incorporate a feeling into my work. I hope that these comments of my actual experiences may help you to understand that the mileage may vary from mind to mind. Words are good tools. Pictures are good tools. Use what is necessary to get the job done. Thanks for reading. Your comment about chewing on the colors did generate a vibrant visual for me. :-) Peace Pam Chott www.songofthephoenix.com ____________________________________________________________________ T h e O r c h i d L i s t Open Electronic Forum for Jewelry Manufacturing Methods and Procedures ____________________________________________________________________ Orchid FAQ: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/faq.htm Orchid Archives: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/archive Orchid Galleries: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/gallery.htm Invite a Friend: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ____________________________________________________________________ Tips From The Jeweler's Bench - Article Archive ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/tip_sear.htm The Jeweler's Selected Bibliography List ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/jewelry-books Buy Orchid Jewelry: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/shop ____________________________________________________________________ -Unsubscribe: -Email: orchid-request AT ganoksin.com Body=unsubscribe subject=blank ____________________________________________________________________ |
