Nikon coolpix 885 replacement?

I just heard from the camera clinic and there is no hope for my
Nikon coolpix 885.

So two things

  1. any ideas for a cheap replacement - I was really happy with it
and don’t need any more features and I certainly don’t have the money
I had to buy it 7 years ago

  2. does anyone have this camera and would like the accessories? The
USB cable was proprietary, and I’m happy to send that with the
    battery and charger.

(email me off forum for the accessories please)

This is the best camera… the cannon power shot sd550 I get great
photos. I sold my nikon coolpix on ebay, they go for almost nothing,
but it didn’t have enought pixels or whatever, to make a good photo
for press, or reproduction in a mag or book. My husband had a cannon
power shot and didn’t want to give it up so he bought me my own. the
menu is large so easy to read for us over 50 yr eyes. I am not an
expert in cameras or anything digital but have sent the images to be
reproduced and the graphic designers love them and even use them for
samples to show customers. thanks sue knopp enamelist

Alison - while there are many new good cameras, if you really love
the 885, buy another on Ebay. I just checked and there are three
listed, all for sale in the $50US range. Maybe buy two.

I bought a 995 some time ago and actually learned how to take pretty
good pictures with it. It occurred to me that it too might break, so
I bought a backup identical camera for about $150US a couple of years
ago. I have one semi-permanently mounted on a cloud dome for quick
inventory pictures and the other is available for fancier shots.

I know there are better new cameras, but I’d rather make jewelry
than learn another camera right now.

I just got the Nikon coolpix s10. It has the swivel lens, which the
885 does not (very useful). It is 6mpixel which is plenty for
magazine submissions. Very simple to use. Good close up. Downside, no
control over aperture or speed. Goes for around $250.

In the interest of balance-- I have a Nikon Coolpix 995, and I can’t
compare it to Canon or any other camera, but I will say I am very
happy with it (except that it is bulky to schlep along on travel).
It does, indeed, take pictures that are suitable for publication.
Take a look at my article in the brand new issue of Art Jewelry (pg
28)-- I took all the images with it, as well as those in every
article I have had in the magazine.

I love the swivel body, which I have not seen in any other camera. I
even rotated it all the way around so I could look at the screen to
compose a shot of myself-- and the camera’s “brain” flipped the
image so I wasn’t looking at it upside down!

So, if you can get this camera on eBay for “almost nothing”, go for
it-- it is an axcellent camera! Do also get a bigger flash card for
it-- mine is 64MB, which is plenty of storage.
