I sort of feel like I am telling how I walked miles to school in the
    snow.

I started making a few things in gold when the only way I could buy
gold was from jewelers who sold second hand gold. I would buy old
gold jewelry at around $35 per oz. That sure does tell my age. I
mostly made things for the family as my jewelry activities was only a
    hobby at the time.

It was quite an adventure stepping up to gold but was well worth it.

The big question is, will you have an outlet for your gold
creations. Having a lot of gold pieces in inventory can sure restrict
what you can do in silver.
