    Finally figured it out. The tips were bent into somewhat of a hook
    shape. It was a simple matter to hold the measuring edge against a
    bench block and using a hammer handpiece on the other edge, forge the
    tips straight again. Pointers are sharp and edges parallel. 

    It should be good for another 15 years. 

    If some fumble fingered fool (me!) doesn't drop it again.
