I can't stay silent any longer, not when another Orchidian says she
was a palm reader and English Teacher too. It's been such fun to
read about everyone's interesting journeys and the often tiny
    degrees of separation.

Like a lot of you, I have a hodge-podge list of little jobs, some
truly "odd jobs" and a few real ones.

In the first group falls shoe shiner (age 5), baby sitter, disc
jockey, palm reader, tea leaves as well, travel agent, radio feature
producer, newspaper feature writer /photographer and probably some
    I've forgotten about.

As a single mom I supported us with a secretary job in a dental
supply company. You can't imagine how many colors, shapes and sizes
of false teeth there are. This job put me through college. Then I
had a wonderful 12 year career teaching English, first to high
school kids in California, then in Turkey and back in the states ESL
    to migrant farm workers.

At some point I tired of talking about the work of others and
decided to make something myself. This led me to longish stint
producing documentaries. This medium suited me. I could use words.
We English majors like that, but now I could also work with images.
What fun. I really loved this work, its collaborative nature and the
chance to be creative were appealing. Eventually the constant
fundraising took the glow off the fun and although my favorite
subjects were artist profiles, I realized I still was "talking"
    about the work of others.

During the editing of my last film, "Con Brio: Karl Ulrich Schnabel,
Master Teacher of Piano", we were having a lot of technical problems
with our system. I would come home exhausted and tense after feeling
trapped 10 hours with tech demons in a dark editing room, and make a
beaded necklace. I found this simple, totally low-tech procedure so
relaxing. I didn't realize I was getting seduced into a new line of
work. Now, after several metals classes at our local community
college, I still think of myself as a seasoned beginner. I sell my
work in local shows and at a couple of galleries and can't wait to
learn more techniques (and buy more equipment) so I can put what is
in my head on metal. I'm hooked on images, tired of words, and am so
happy that this is no longer about the work of others.

Thanks to all of you who have been so generous. What a fabulous
    community.

Beverly
