========[ Invite a Friend - http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ]======== John, > I find it very hard to believe that there's a conspiracy to > underpay women, It isn't that there is a conspiracy but an ingrained attitude among a lot of people that women (or blacks, or Mexicans or whatever) are not as good as everyone else (men, whites, whatever). Remember I already pointed out to you that where you and I are located, this isn't usually tolerated. But please note that there are many, many religious people who don't even think women should work, no matter that they should be paid appropriately, or even paid at all. Women as second class citizens is commonplace throughout the world as well as in areas of the US. It just isn't happening where you are located (I like to think it's because you're located in an enlightened area--but there are a lot of people out there who think you are located in a morally bankrupt area). All of us need to step outside of our own little worlds to see what is happening out there in the rest of it. I have a female friend who runs her own business consulting in the medical field. Extremely successful, making more money than any of us by 5-20 times. Recently she's been spending a lot of her time in rural Texas with a group of doctors. They haven't got a clue what to make of her. She's strong, self managed, doesn't need men looking out for her, knows more than any of them do and she has them completely befuddled. They know they need her, because of how successful she is, but they simply don't get it that a woman can be like that. Incidentally, my father, before he retired, was a statistician. He knows more than most how statistics can be misused (he has worked with a lot of human rights groups on the abuse of statistical evidence by various governments--our own included), but he also understands that statistics can reveal truths about what is going on out there. I know you find it hard to believe the JCK reports, but they just don't have a reason to manipulate the figures in this vein. And while a lot of the figures may be based on larger firms figures, the reality is that the larger firms are employing far more people than anyone else, so if they are paying women less across the board, then women as a whole are in fact earning less. Are there individual exceptions? Sure, look at my friend. But that doesn't negate the fact that far more women earn less for the same work than men. Daniel R. Spirer, G.G. Daniel R.
