EVERY ONE is self taught. There just isn't any way some one is going
to 'learn' you any skill. Schools can provide a rich resource of
knowledge (provided they offer what you seek), but research,
experimentation, and persistence (rent and hunger as previously
mentioned) also work very very well.

Workshops and school are very useful in the beginning, things like
which end of a tool is hot or sharp, and a grounding in a few basic
skills. After that you are on your own. Just remember, if you are
ever going to be self supporting you are also going to have to go
well beyond what you were taught in a class of ten others.
