    Again, I will put in a plug for keeping a database. We used
    Filemaker Pro, and it was more than adequate for our needs. I could
    see in a second how any particular client had originally found us,
    how many times they used our services, and their "total value." Also,
    if they'd originally been referred by another client, I could send
    the latter a thank you card--even if they'd made the referral years
    ago--which often generated more business. 

    I was a book publicist in an even more previous incarnation, so I
    was keeping "databases" on file cards, long before I had a computer.
    (I grow old, I grow old...)
