    It is just as easy to be assualted in your home with less potential
    of help. It is also a lot scarier since it "hits home' and you can't
    separate the assualf from your personal space. 

    I suggest you take the advice of setting up a good block system, and
    suggesting that he beef up his security, - guard dogs are available
    for rent in some cities. Ask the local police if they do or can
    recommend someone to do a physical security consultation on both his
    shop and both of your homes. (You might get it for the shop, home is
    probably a matter of self education) You will help both yourself and
    him. 

    Then later get some other people together and learn some self
    defense. It should not only cover physical security, but tactics for
    negotiation, auto and home safety. It will give you the confidence we
    all need to face the realities of urban life. It might also be good
    to get your kids involved.
