Just a quick comment Zinnia,

When you heat the ring, you may find that gold and platinum expand
differently. The joint may have fit perfectly, but when heated, it
will pull apart! (much gnashing of teeth) At least that was my
    experience.

Loren's advice about using a laser is right on. Should that not be
possible (I know there are Orchidians that do laser work for the
trade), you'll need to use a stainless hose clamp to hold the ring
    securely together for soldering.

Judy in Kansas, where temps have plummeted from 70s F to 20s F.
    Winter storm possible.
