    Hopefully someone who knows more than me about motors will also reply
    - I know some, but only so far. In general, yes, it can be used. The
    most certain thing to do is to also salvage the motor, and then they
    will be matched. The problems arise with matching impedance and stuff,
    which is where my knowlege falters. Also the wiring. That means that
    maybe it will work but the motor burns out in a week, and the like. In
    general, though, a mechanical variable speed is just a variable
    rheostat, and can work with all sorts of things. But it's better to
    know for sure than to just wire it up and cross your fingers. I can
    say from experience that crossing them really, really tightly doesn't
    help......
