    Now that I know the law here in the U.S. is 1/10 karat. or it must
    be no lower than 13.9 karat. I believe acid-etch tests with these
    tolerance I can determine the quality of gold. 

    10 karat 9.9 karat - 10.8 karat 
    14 karat 13.9 karat - 14.8 karat 
    18 karat 17.9 karat - 18.8 karat
