I have set ups that are just 2 wheels each, they run in a line. They
are useful because not all stones need all the steps. Each stone is
different and although it can be done with 100 220 400 and 600 and
polish, sometimes, and it is hard to say when, it is useful. For
example, I finished a handpiece of coyomita agate, it is for display,
it had eyes on it but they were on the very edge of the stone. I
would have lost them if I had not been very careful, I ground to them
with the 100 and then used the 220 and the 280 to tease out the eyes
while removing enough stone around it to smooth over a fracture. That
is not a very good description but it is hard to say how I know when
to move on to the next step. As to using the cernium or the tin, I
sometimes use that but if there is a druzy area or a rind of
crystals, I like the diamond because there are no traces of the pink
or the white of the polishing compound driven into those spaces. That
is hard to get out. Seems so much simpler to use diamond in those
cases. Actually, I am not sure why the 3000 is there, I just know
that is the progression of the diamond paste kits and the wheels on
my small flat unit. I believe this is the process used when faceting
gems stones but I am not positive because I do not do that.
