So much of this depends on the material you cut. For most, I would
start with a 100 grit wheel rather than an 80. From there-

Most jaspers and agates i would go 220, 400, 600, 3000, cerium oxide
    on a leather buff.

Some materials are porous and tin or cerium oxide will get in the
pores and discolor them. Those I normally take through the 14000
diamond and finish with superpolish. This includes most yowah and
    Koroit material.

Some materials like variscite and alunite are very soft and they cut
fast on even a fine grit wheel. 220, 600, a worn 600 belt cupped in
the palm to remove flat spots even a 600 grit wheel can put in this
material, followed by cerium oxide, Zam or whatever gets the job
    done.

Of course, YMMV.
