I have been taught on a vertical machine and we start with 100 and
sometimes even as coarse as 50. You need to use that coarse first
step to remove stone and shape. If you start with anything finer you
will use up your 220 belts or wheel fast just to get the first step
    done. I have been taught to step thru 80, 220, 280, 400, 600, 1,200,
3000 and as a final polish 14,000. Deep scratches and saw marks need
to be removed completely before going on. Again, I was taught to
completely dry the stone after the 600 stage to see if there are any
imperfections, if so, go back to 220 and get them out. I don't use
any polish compound typically. For cabbing or for putting windows or
flats on larger pieces for display I use the 14,000 for a final step
but you can go up to 50,000 if you like. The 14,000 makes a great
final polish and my polish is as good any I have seen.
