    If you are cutting and polishing agate, you might find better results
    by using 600>1200>3000> cerium oxide. Flat surfaces should be
    pre-polished and polished on a flat lap, not a curved wheel, but it
    CAN be done that way. As you progress trough finer grits, make SURE
    you have removed all the scratches from the previous grit. Spend some
    time with the 3000 and you will find the polish with cerium just pops
    right up! NEVER use a grit coarser than 260 or so, 325 is better, or
    you will cause subsurface damage with the quartzes that must be
    ground away with the next grit. The subsurface damage from an 80 grit
    wheel will extend a mm or more into the stone!!! 80 grit is for
    concrete work, get rid of it!!! The 200 is not much better. If your
    600 is in good shape, the grooves from a 260-280 or 325 should come
    out in 20-30 seconds of work.
