========[ Invite a Friend - http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ]======== I think the what most people forget to remember is that when a piece from Tiffany's or Cartier is ripped off or copied they don't usually just copy the work, they will stamp it with their name as well. This is in fact fraud and they are decieving clients into believing they are purchasing genuine Tiffany's or Cartier pieces. The client is infact more interested in purchasing from an artist than they are the piece. Laying claim to designs (unless a symbol or name is involved) is outragous. Like Elkka mentioned "no-one is born knowing how to make jewelry and we learn from watching others". Simple designs we take for granted today were at one time cutting edge, such as simple box clasp. This is the evolution of jewellery and it will continue to evolve, whatis cutting edge today is soon to become yesterdays news. If everyone hoards their designs and ideas how are we to grow and evolve our trade? I think the bigger question here is, do you really care that someone has copied/imitated your work and take offence as an original artist? Or are you angry as a business man/woman and do you care more about the lost revenue from potential clients purchasing from another source? In most cases I think it is the latter of the two. The fact is as much as we like to call our selves artists, we are money oriented first. An artist would be angry their work was copied as when it comes to paintings/drawings there is only 1 original, only 1 original painting/drawing to be sold. The original is their masterpiece. These pieces are one of a kind and are cherished for that reason. One of my teachers once told the class "Anything which is a 1 of a kind, isnt worth reproducing." Sadly this shows how our trade has become less interested in the Art and more interested in money. If someone copies your design and produces it under their own name, I think one should be honoured and revel in the fact that your design is successful and has caused others to imitate it and grow from it. I look forward to the day I see one of my orginal designs copied, that is the day I will know my design is a success. ____________________________________________________________________ T h e O r c h i d L i s t Open Electronic Forum for Jewelry Manufacturing Methods and Procedures ____________________________________________________________________ Orchid FAQ: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/faq.htm Orchid Archives: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/archive Orchid Galleries: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/gallery.htm Invite a Friend: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ____________________________________________________________________ Tips From The Jeweler's Bench - Article Archive ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/tip_sear.htm The Jeweler's Selected Bibliography List ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/jewelry-books Buy Orchid Jewelry: ~ http://www.ganoksin.com/shop ____________________________________________________________________ -Unsubscribe: -Email: orchid-request AT ganoksin.com Body=unsubscribe subject=blank ____________________________________________________________________ |
