        Fold-Forming

Fold-forming uses the metal's plasticity and ductility to make
complex forms resembling chased, constructed and soldered shapes
rapidly from single sheets of metal. The concept involves
folding and creasing metal, as you would paper, and then
selectively forging, forming, rolling and unfolding it to
produce light, elegant, volumetric shapes. Radical changes in
        cross section are possible in 3-5 minutes. The tools are simple;
fingers, hammers, mallets, anvil, vise and rolling mill. The
techniques work with all metals and are applicable for
jewellery, holloware, sculpture, enamelling, anodizing etc.
Developed steadily since 1980, it has been recognized as a
completely new approach to metalworking, and today hundreds of
designers and metalsmiths around the world integrate some aspect
        of it into their work.

        Gold Application Techniques

This workshop teaches methods of creating surface designs in
gold alloys on copper. The result of a two year research project
for the Society of North American goldsmiths, this workshop
includes fusion applications (gold painting), the use of resists
for gold application, doublee (fusion laminate), Keum-boo,
depletion gilding (tumbaga, guanin), inlay, overlay procedures
and a discussion of fire gilding. Painterly techniques are shown
which may be used to enrich enameled surfaces. The applicability
of enamels to these surfaces is discussed and demonstrated.
Control factors are discussed in some depth and safety issues
are touched on. The approach is that of a working goldsmith and
therefore the techniques are evaluated in the light of practical
        applications for creative purposes.

        Biography

Charles Lewton-Brain studied and worked in Europe and North
America, and has taught at the Alberta College of Art since
1986. He is known internationally for inventing Fold-Forming, a
new system of working sheet metal into elegant forms using
simple tools, and as co-founder of the Ganoskin Project, an
information resource and forum for metalsmiths online. In
addition, Charles and his partner Dee Fontans ran The
Lewton-Brain/Fontans Centre for Jewellery Studies from 1991
2001. Charles is now the program head of the Jewellery/Metals
        program at ACAD.
