Hi Thor,

    Yes, you are right. If a person speaks of "silver" I would assume it
    is a generic term and they are not defining the alloy or lack of
    alloy. However, "sterling silver" refers to what you call 925 silver
    (or .925 silver, usually meaning 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper)
    is sterling silver. Fine silver is .999 silver (99.9% pure silver and
    0.1 other impurities, or what is considered pure silver). There are
    other alloys, but I really don't know much about them.
