You got it Kristi. I buy on eBay regularly. Keep a sharp eye out,
and grab 'em at the last minute. On any given day there are more than
100,000 colored gemstones on eBay (I hate diamonds !). They can't all
    be losers.

    Hi, Lisa,

I always love your emails and so agree with you! Except this time. I
sell on Ebay. I disclose shipping costs clearly, sometimes use
calculated shipping and always have the Buyer in mind. When an item
is over $25.00 insurance is required. If the package is lost or
damaged, I will replace it or refund the payment if it can't be
replaced. But the cost of replacement or the refund has to be covered
somehow. That's what insurance is for. Just last week a pricey book I
shipped was bent in half in transit, pretty much destroyed. It was
insured, so the Buyer got all his money back (including shipping and
the cost of insurance) and so did I.

The grit might have been cheap but an unhappy Buyer and a possible
negative is very dear in my mind!

    Kind regards,
    Vera Battemarco

Yes, Cindy, that's pretty much my point. EBay, whether rightly or
wrongly, does not consider itself to be an enforcement agency. I do
not believe that's a conscious decision, more evolutionary,
probably. They consider themselves, as an entity, to be a venue for
buyers and sellers to meet, and their focus is on the smooth flowing
of cash between the two, and that's about it. I'm not, by any means,
saying it is "Right", it's just the nature of the beast. To be fair,
in microcosm, if you permitted two people to do a transaction on your
premises (As I have done, occasionally), and one looks at you and
says, "This is not a real stone, arrest him!", would you involve
yourself, or pull out a badge? EBay is bigger than that, and as such
has incurred much more responsibility for their actions, certainly,
but if one has been sold fraudulent material across state lines the
proper authority is the FBI - if it's international that agency
would be the FTC. And yes, EBay could do more about jerking away
privileges from offenders and the like, but again, to be fair, last I
heard there were 30,000,000 items there, and probably only so much
sincere overworked staff. I'm not being an apologist for them - it
may sound like it, but I'm not. Just - one should never look at a cat
and ask, "Now why can't you be a dog?"

I just wanted to let you all know that ebay pulled the auctions that
I had purchased stones from summitjewels, due to circumventing ebay
fees, so I am not liable for paying this guy for the items I bid on.
He still has lots of auctions on ebay that still run this scam, but
at least I don't have to be liable for paying him those outrageous
    fees.

Thank goodness! Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas, I really
    appreciate it.

Hope you will all be more cautious than I was this time. I know I
    will be in the future!

    All the best,
    Laura
