    If you (or a friend) can visit the gallery, get the names of other
    jewelers whose work is carried there, and contact those jewelers for
    feedback. If you can't visit the gallery, ask them for references,
    specifically for the names of other artists they work with. If a
    gallery won't give you this information, that should be a tip-off in
    itself, but any reputable gallery should do so without hesitation. 

    I have done this on several occasions in the past and have found it
    to be most helpful. The artists that I called were quite forthcoming
    in most instances and helped me make an educated decision about the
    gallery. This isn't a surefire solution, but it's the best that I've
    found.
