Why even bother with a coiled spring concept, when there are other
    methods of creating tension.

    1) You could go with a flat rectangular piece of spring metal,
slightly curved and rivet one end to part "A" of the hinge, and have
it move freely in a recessed area on part "B" of the hinge with
constant pressure. Same principle, but without the coil. You could
even do away with attaching one end by having recessed areas in both
sides of the hinge and have it stay in place once the pin is put
    through the hinge.

    2) You could do the same with two pieces of "round" spring wire.
Have it lock or rather stay in place with the hinge pin and have it
slide with tension within two pieces of closed end tubing, set at 90
degrees to the main hinge, with one piece of tubing soldered on part
"A", and one piece of tubing soldered on part "B". The closed end
part of the tubing, could be a small ball soldered on, which would
finish off the look quite nicely. Hope this is clear enough to
follow, it's very easy to comprehend, when you are the one trying to
    explain it :-)

Even nicer if everything was completely hidden.

Best Regards.
