Try Metholated Spirits (not the ghosts or the licqour). It is a
clean residue burning solution, "Isoporyl" leaves a carbon residue on
items. Another name is "METHYL HYDRATE,- 99.9% PURE" AND ITS CHEAP,
    TOO....GERRY!

Plain old denatured alcohol available in most hardward, and paint
stores is the fuel I use in my alcohol lamp. Alma

I use denatured alchohol from the hardware store. it is still used
to prepare shellac and to remove same.

    Hi Justine,

The alcohol lamp you use is glass and has beveled edges for tilting
it, right? If so, you want to use Denatured Alcohol. It is also
suitable for dentist torches. It is pretty much the cleanest fuel you
can use for jewelers lamps and torches, and doesn't produce smoke. It
still produces evaporation fumes, so you want to work in a well
    ventilated room as always.

You can buy denatured alcohol at places like Lowe's, Home Depot, and
I'm sure some hardware stores will have it.

    I hope this helps.

Justine, Go to the hardware store and get a can of denatured alcohol.
It may be labeled "Alcohol solvent". Jerry in Kodiak

    Hi Justine,
Just get a can of denatured alcohol. It'll work fine. Most every
hardware, drug, paint & home center has it.

    Justine,

Denatured alcohol is the *only* thing to use in an alcohol lamp (in
my humble opinion). It burns clean and is virtually orderless when
burning. I haven't been told that I can use anything else, and
    haven't ever thought to.

But, then again, I have no formal training, so if anyone else knows
    of something better, please share!

You can find it at any hardware store, big or small.

    Hi Justine
    Try Methyl Hydrate

    Hi Justine

I use methanol in my alcohol lamp as well as for mixing my anti
fire scale. If you live in a cold climate, you may be able to find it
    as Gas Line Antifreeze.

Read the label to make sure it is methanol or methyl alcohol (same
thing) I buy it in a 4 litre container for about $10.

    Good Luck

Hi there, What we use in our workshop & at the school where I teach
adult -ed. is denatured alcohol...This can easily be bought in any
hardware store in the paint dept. You'll fin Hello from the Bay
    Area to all........Sincerely, Jo-Ann M. Donivan.

From: "Margaret Malm" <kadok AT infowest.com>

It is also called methyl alcohol. Quite poisonous -- will make you
blind; and you can even ingest it through your skin.

I don't imagine you can find it in drug stores any more; but they may
carry "rubbing alcohol" (which is often isopropyl alcohol, or
Isopropanol), and probably also some types of ethanol (ethyl
alcohol) that have been doctored up to make them poisonous to drink.
You might try the rubbing alcohol, it is probably the least expensive
and would probably work. I know it will burn. (Although I am not an
    authority on alcohol lamps!)

It is still called methanol. You just don't find it at drugstores
anymore. I buy it from an automotive speed shop that sells it as
racing fuel. Don't expect to find it at national chain auto parts
store such as Autozone. You will have to look in the phonebook and
call around to find it. I pay about $4.75/gal for it in Little Rock.
