========[ Invite a Friend - http://www.ganoksin.com/invite.htm ]======== From: "mhg" <mhg AT mhgjewelry.com> In the past i have used my Jewelry designing skills to design fund raising pins for different causes. In 1996 i designed a pin to raise money for AIDS called INFINITY. http://www.aegis.com/news/PR/1996/PR961121.html and it I raised $1,500.00. the Money went to the (MAPP) Midwest AIDS Prevention Project. When September 11 happening i felt like i needed to do something to help, just as the rest of us did. so being a jewelry designer i designed another pin to help raise money. I called the pin SERENITY. http://www.professionaljeweler.com/archives/news/2001/091901story.html I ended up raising $5,000.00 in one month and donated the money to the American Red Cross Relief Fund. and now when the Hurricane hit i felt i need to do something again. knowing how much work is involved with these fund raisers i called on the help of a fellow designer named Mark Labaj and we worked up a design that incorporated symbols of the Day. We are calling the pin REBIRTH. i am looking for jewelers that are interested in casting and finishing (polishing and soldering a pin back on) this piece. My studio is a bit to business to handle all lot of orders. also if any retail jewelers are interested in a copy of the mold, so you can produce the pin and make a donation please contact me. the more jewelers that are selling it the more money we can raise. we are not looking for any copyright money, this is strictly a donation, no one should profit from others huge losses. the pins will be selling for $36.00 after tax. the original pin and mold should be done by Tuesday. Thank you for your help. Matthew Gross www.mhgjewelry.com Mark Labaj www.marklabaj.com From: Lisa Orlando <marilisa3 AT earthlink.net> Hi Terrie, When I first read your post about Katrina survivors making a living off beaded jewelry, I thought "Fat chance--given all the experienced people with orderly lives who can't seem to do that." But then your idea started percolating and I came up with a possible scenario--one that would need someone much more high-powered than I am to pull it off. Here it is: A non-profit, dba "Survivor Designs: Jewelry Made by the Women of New Orleans." A designer line--with some already-successful design talent behind it--in over-the-top Mardi Gras style. Donated talent, donated instruction, donated supplies, and distributed through a chain like Nordstrom's, with all profits plowed back into the non- profit. Worn proudly by the celebrities who want to help, too--a big splash about that in InStyle, say. It probably wouldn't give any of the survivors a life-long career, but it might help in the short run, build some confidence for the future, and eventually give start-up grants to "workers" who want to do something else. I know we have some beaded jewelry designers on Orchid who sell through high end stores. Anyone interested? It could be an "all-star" effort, with each of you coming up with a handful of designs (maybe you could rope in a couple of the new film actor/jewelry designers). And, in my experience, if you have your other ducks in a row, you can usually find a "re-granting" foundation that will take you under its wing, so that you don't need to jump through all the 501c3 (official non-profit) hoops yourself (please excuse the terribly mixed metaphors...). Lisa Orlando Aphrodite's Ornaments From: Lisa Orlando <marilisa3 AT earthlink.net> To those who have offered beads, etc., I guess I've received enough feedback to know that at least some Orchidians don't think my little plan is crazy. If I actually manage to set it in motion, I was thinking of soliciting Rio and Fire Mountain. I don't have the wherewithal to collect beads. I'm still not sure I'm going to have the wherewithal to do any of it. My current "job," which I must complete first, is somewhat overwhelming and exhausting. Oh, that I were young again.... Right now, 57 feels like 77. I can't imagine how all those people survived Katrina, when something like this leaves me so wiped out. But thanks for your generosity! Lisa Orlando Aphrodite's Ornaments From: "Karen Seymour-Ells" <karenworks AT comcast.net> For those who had requested information on Barbara Minor and Chris Hentz they are physically fine, but it sounds like a bit overwhelmed. They were without power until just recently, they have power back but are serving as a way station for friends from NO who are trying to retrieve belongings in the city. Since they are in Baton Rouge she was repeating all the things you heard on the news, there is a lot of regional damage but no major damage to their home or studio. Gas, food etc. are all low in the city with tremendous lines everywhere. The city has doubled in size, all available housing has been bought up and the infrastructure just can't keep up with the demands. They had a generator for necessities during the worst of it. Karen S.E. in ironically drought stricken Northern Illinois From: Lisa Bialac-Jehle <byzantia AT earthlink.net> Hi all, Just spoke to Dashka, and asked her if it was ok to post her info here in case anyone in the orchid community is looking for her. Here is the info as she posted it to another site: My husband, Larry and I are currently staying in Passe-a-Grille, FL until further notice. Wendy Rosen was kind enough to offer us her vacation home here. My new cell phone # is 832-439-2353, house phone is 727-363-3140 and email is dashkaroth AT cox.net. Please let all the artists know that I am ok, but that I do not have access to my bills, or my checking account, so bills will not be paid until I can get back to New Orleans, and who knows how long that will be!
