    Hi,

I have an idea to connect hurricane/flood displaced jewelry industry
workers with prospective employers nationwide. FEMA reports some
shelters have public access Internet computers. All I need is a list
of jewelry companies that are hiring and willing to interview
Hurricane victims despite the obvious limitations they may have. I
can make some web space available on our site right away.
    Suggestions are extremely welcome...

I am sure you know we all think this is a bummer for you and want to
    help.

To you, who have been victims of Katrina, consider this offer of
support, it comes from my heart.

Read and then email me off line at dee AT jewelrytraining.com and we
will see how we can assist.

We have a large stand alone school and can make some room for about
jewelers & designers, several. And can accommodate you well. The
hand tools will be used, some better than others, but we will see you
get by well, and excellent polishing and steaming and quality
torches, foredoms and benches. Soldering is done by propane & oxy or
natural gas and oxy. May not be what you are accustomed to but the
    energy here is great.

We will assist in locating housing and employment for you. You can
come here, continue with your work and perhaps keep your business
alive and be free to create while your world is rebuilding at home.

Or, contact me if you are wishing to gain employment in your neck of
the woods, we do have a large group of employers that we hear from on
    a regular basis.

No charge to you while you are in need. Can't guarantee your keep,
but will do our best. And do not discount yourself if you have a
    family.

    Kind regards, Dee

    Hi guys,

Red Cross called this morning. It was a very polite nurse wanting
to know about some of the information I filled out in my
application. Why I felt that I couldn't lift 50 lbs repeatedly, and
what did I mean when I wrote that I was a, "very small woman"?

I told him That at 5'3", 50 lbs was half of my total body weight,
and no....I am not a "little person". I guessed that is what he
must have been thinking from the ever-so-delicate tone of his voice
when he asked the question. He apparently had so much to do that he
didn't read further down the application, which would have told him
    that my stats are 5' 3" 100 lbs, 49 years old...lol

As he started to quiz me more on it. I took a deep breath and said
to him, "look, I'm small, I'm old, I am not phisically
overwhelming...to say the least. I speak a whole bunch of foreign
languages. Some of them really well. I am a business owner and a
manager of a lot of complex annoying stuff.

Perhaps it could be a waste of resources to have me hauling sacks
of potatoes, as I will undoubtedly be really really bad at it".
Again, if anyone had read further, they would have seen that info
    too.

Message to me...they are swamped. Overwhelmed. Over their heads .
Me and a whole raft of others have just agreed to jump in and make
my life and theirs a lot more discombobulated......sigh..... As
Calvin and Hobbes used to say: "Kawabunga"

To underscore this, not 10 minutes after I had hung up with him,
the Red Cross called again. This time it was a very nice young lady
wondering if I would like to sign up for some classes if I plan on
    being a volunteer?

She was calling regarding my signing up a week previously. When I
didn't hear back from them after two days, I drove down and
registered. Figured it would be faster than waiting for them to call
me. So it was. Told her that I had already taken two, and was going
for the third on Wednsday, but thanks for the call.

Alll of this happened while I was sitting out at one of the local
cafe's here in Topanga, waiting for our local Doc, Doug Roy to
maybe have room in his busy schedule to give me my required tetanus
    shot. Known Doug forever.

When I told him why I wanted it, his brow knitted, his head
lowered, and he immediately began fulminating....... and writing.
Turns out one of his many interest is disaster medicine. By the time
he was done scribbling things down and talking a mile a minute on
what I should get, who I should call, what I should do, (this has
been most of my friend's and family's reaction by the way), he had
me scheduled up for every non-or-semi experimental inoculation
currently available now or ever, including Dengue Fever.

Woof! Took me a while to talk him off of the ledge. Explained that
for all I know, I might get sent to Chicago, and that despite the
possibility that I might contract ebola, I think I was going to
wait on the other shots, and stick,(no pun intended...youch!) with
just the tetanus for now. Kinda made me think though.

Oh..almost forgot, The Red Cross nurse...RC caller #1..... decided
after speaking with me that I would best serve their needs by being
in their Family Services department. He was really happy to hear
that I spoke more than english, and that they would be able to do
    something with me. Me too.

That means I will probably be evaluating people for intake,
determining their needs and placement. At least that's how he
explained it. Guess I will wait to see if he proves to be correct.

Sounds like a lot of responsibility. I will try to do a good job.
He asked if he could, " place a big sticker on my application to
that effect?" I now have a big sticker on my application to that
    effect.

    Take care,

Lisa, (Trying to find a simple way that Orchidians can contribute. I
will run it by the RC tomorrow) Topanga, CA USA

Inspired by Marianne Hunter, I emailed Chris Hentz and Barbara Minor
in Baton Rouge. They replied that they're fine and trying to help
anyone they can "....and...if people want to help...they can donate
$$ to the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF)
http://www.craftemergency.org/support/katrina or a local fund raising
effort that goes directly to victims and for rebuilding.
http://www.2theadvocate.com/relief/ or the organization of their
choice." They also said that the press reports aren't at all
    exaggerated--it really is that bad.

I agree, but also with the caveat that you make sure you are covered
for all things. Regular homeowners, business policies do NOT cover
flood, earthquake or other natural disasters that may be a threat in
your area. You need to purchase separate policies for those, and
maybe even from a separate company. Please don't assume something is
covered, make sure you ask about specific coverage. AOL followed 5 or
so businesses for a year that were startups, and one of those was a
day spa in New Orleans. They did have wind damage insurance, but they
already are having problems going back and forth with the companies
trying to wiggle out of the coverage. Get things covered and in
    writing!

Since water quality is my day job, I was forwarded this website by
USGS on hurricane damage studies. I have been without a television
for a couple of weeks now and all I get is reports by NPR. from this
I can pretty well extrapolate other damage.

    Hello Everybody,

I think it's a great idea to teach jewelery to folks. Is it possible
to set up a program of sorts - so that people wanting to be helped
    can be?

I'm concerned that well-meaning Orchidians could be targeted by
troublemakers. Especially if they think people are loaded down with
fancy metal and gems, regardless of what Orchidians may actually be
carrying. I'm all for helping, but knowing that people were being
beaten at the Superdome makes me worry about the safety of the
kindly volunteers coming to help in San Antonio and Houston.

The outpouring of help is fabulous, but please be careful. All it
takes is a few rotten apples to ruin everything for everybody.
Please don't go anywhere alone, and keep your belongings secure. And
if you are in SATown, and go off base, please lock your car doors.
    Carjackings happen here often.

If Orchidians coming to San Antonio to help have a chance, check out
the Paseo del Rio (the Riverwalk)- it would be a welcome break from
the chaos. Also, please call or come by our little house. We have no
room for overnight guests, but we can offer a home-cooked meal.
e-mail me at moonshinemetal AT yahoo.com , if you like.

Just my two cent's worth. Would be happy to donate beads to any
    effort.
    Susannah Garcia
