Dear Nan, All of us have had the experience of losing the liquid in
our pickle pots. There is nothing detrimental about the experience.
The white crust that you mention will come back to do your work with
just a fresh injection of water. The remarkable thing about pickle
is that it does not seem to "wear out", assuming , of course, that
you have not contaminated it with ferrous metals. ( I am refering,
of course, to the phenomenon of copper plating which happens after
contamination ) And, of course, when you consider the ready
availability of pickle by using pH adjusting sodium bi-sulphate from
your local pool suppliers and using it with pickle pots supplied by
small ceramic cooking vessels, the cost of pickling is negligible.
In another vein, when one uses boric acid mixed with alcohol as a
flux when soldering, the need for pickling is significantly reduced.
The chemistry of jewelry making is really quite simple....the
alchemy of good design is somewhat more elusive ! Ron Mills,
